Researchers in the Netherlands have found that driving for just three hours at night was similar to having a blood alcohol content of 0.08 percent, the legal limit in Massachusetts. The test was conducted Utrecht University on men aged 21 to 25, and the researchers supervised their driving skills at various shifts between 9pm and 5am.
The longer the driving shift, the more the men’s driving resembled that of intoxicated drivers. Researchers estimate that as much as 20% of vehicle accidents in industrialized countries can be attributed to sleepiness.
